It would be such a simple thing to fall back into their comfortable banter and find refuge in its familiar safety. Julian could already feel the response on his tongue. The scared, lonely boy inside Julian screamed that he needed to stop this, stop before it got too far, but it was too late; Garak was everywhere, written into his very bones, and there wasn’t anything he could do about it.
And somewhere, in the Beta Quadrant, on an absolute joke of a starbase, was a version of him that had made this work. The thought that he was living without it was unbearable. The alternative, being the version of him that didn’t have Garak’s hand on his elbow, was worse.
