As she hugged me back feebly, she began to cry.
"You're always a crybaby", I wanted to tell her in another of my poor attempts to say something nice. I caressed her head, sinking my face into her sapphire-colored hair.
Under different circumstances I would’ve turned red and felt my heart about to explode; maybe – driven by an unexpected act of bravery – I would’ve exposed myself once and for all. Instead, I closed my eyes and breathed her warmth into my lungs.
If that gesture could’ve reassured and guarded her – absorbing all of her fears and anxieties – I would’ve done that. If I could’ve erased her turmoil and replaced it with a smile, I wouldn’t have hesitated.

Sei sempre la solita piagnucolona, avrei voluto dirle nello scarso tentativo di dirle qualcosa di carino. Invece le accarezzai la nuca con i polpastrelli, affondando la testa fra i suoi capelli color zaffiro.
In un’altra occasione mi sarei colorato di un leggero color cremisi. Magari sarei stato folgorato dal batticuore e, spinto da un moto di coraggio inaspettato, mi sarei fatto coraggio per espormi una volta per tutte. Invece chiusi gli occhi, e respirai il suo calore a pieni polmoni.
Se quel gesto avesse potuto tranquillizzarla e custodirla – se avessi potuto assorbire tutte le sue paure e le sue angosce così – lo avrei fatto. Se avessi potuto cancellarle il pianto e sostituirci un sorriso, non avrei esitato.
Dopotutto, io la amavo.
