Sae could drown in this feeling—maybe already has. Or, perhaps he's being slowly boiled alive by the heat that has always simmered between them. Like a frog in the pot, blind to the lethal truth. He’s aware that this ends poorly for them, but he can’t seem to care when Shidou’s fingers are pulling at the roots of his hair, or bruising the skin on his hip.

Everything gets awful quiet before a train robbery.
The sky turns foggy gold like the scratchy and blurry sepia of an antiquated daguerreotype. It reeks of nostalgia and melancholy like the ol’ Sano family portrait, the ghosts of the deceased left stuck in an oval frame.
Only when the silence reaches its absolute peak does a low rumbling shake up through the earth. The oncoming steam engine chugs rhythmically, its metal wheels creaking along the rattling wooden tracks. Sanzu shares a final nod with Mucho, and the pair lurch into action.

If there's a type of person Hanma can read best it’s this: a little rough around the edges, damaged, and looking for someone they can pour themselves into, someone they think they can fix. Someone who wants to believe they have control. Someone who thinks that snark and sarcasm and wit means they’re tough or impenetrable or immune to feelings. But for all that posturing, really they tend to be the most sensitive. Deep down they’re always the most kind. Hanma can’t stand it: kindness. He doesn’t understand it very much at all.
After Kisaki's death, Hanma Shuji is lost. Until he finds Ryuguji Ken.
This story follows Hanma and Draken from June-July 2008. It's somewhere in-between a slowburn enemies to lovers and a character study. A story of two lost boys who become strangely perfect bedfellows.
"The Ghost" is part two of a series. The first part, "Dead, Pretty Boys" is not required reading, but will help give context.
