“Don’t you think that’s the ideal solution? Mildred needs a guide in the ways of the magical world. And who better to teach her than someone as dedicated to The Craft as yourself.” Miss Pentangle smiles sweetly.
Mum is still looking between them all only now she seems about to laugh. “Yes, that’s right,” she leans in again, her smile every bit as sweet as Miss Pentangle’s. “How kind of you to offer, Miss Hardbroom.”
“I never offered -”
“I’m sure Mildred will benefit greatly from everything you can teach her. After all, you are rather an expert in The Code, I hear.”
Miss Hardbroom continues to sputter.

Later, it will strike Mildred in hindsight that the fact that even Enid had doubts about the plan, should have clued her in that something might be off. On the other hand, no Hubble had ever let common sense get in the way of a good idea.
(In which Mildred is the most earnest little ally, and she observes certain things about Miss Hardbroom and Miss Pentangle, that lead her to a completely erroneous conclusion. And yet, somehow, she still might end up bringing together two women who have misunderstood their feelings for each other for over thirty years.)

“I have not been free,” her voice cracks over the last word, her hands twitching, curling and uncurling in distress as she steps forward, eyes intent on Indigo. “I may have moved forward with the course of time, but since that day I have never been free."

Summary
Pippa Pentangle was rejected by the magic council for her new school idea so while she mends her crushed dream, she decides to buy a run down cottage in a little unknown village. The cottage is hundreds of years old and once belonged to a powerful family of witches and wizards but their name has long since been forgotten.
