As if Lan had read her mind, he tightened his grip on her, pushing her head back against the wall. “Was this your way to get back at me?” Moiraine found it hard to breathe. “Maybe.” Maybe she had just tried to see how far she could push Lan’s limits. Not very far, apparently.

Moiraine made sure he could feel her annoyance through the bond. “I’m fine,” she pointed out. “I’m not going to fall off my horse and break my neck.” Three days ago they had accidentally run into a horde of trollocs, and the outcome hadn’t been pretty. Lan had ridden them back to Tar Valon quickly enough, but judging by how much agitation she felt from him, he must have been worried. Really worried. He hadn’t slept, as far as she knew, and the bond was constantly tense like he was just waiting for the next thing to happen. It was irritating Moiraine, but she also felt a strange mixture of guilt and affection that she couldn’t quite understand yet. They hadn’t been bonded for very long and the fact that they shared their emotions now still sometimes confused her.
