He had read the books where the boy must put the dog out of its misery and prove he was a man, leaving behind his childish sentimentalities.
Curly took the gun, hands shaking. Looked right down the barrel at his dog, emaciated and tired and old. Not so much like the wounded puppy he had rescued years ago, but if he looked in the mirror, he might find he’s still that scared little boy.
