Now it's Max's turn to grin, wide and teasing and maybe a little too earnest.

"Well, somebody just told me that I’m going to be a world champion one day, and there's only one driver around here good enough to beat me, so I'd like to think he'll be there too."

It's silly, and hopeful, but Charles is beaming at him and it feels like a promise.

"Preferably in second place, of course."

Or: There are lots of ways to love Charles Leclerc, Max maybe learns all of them through the years.

Featuring: puddles, stargazing, unsolicited driving lessons, and the overwhelming fear of growing up.

“What are you doing?” Charles asked, his voice cracking.

Max blinked at him once before he smirked and said, “Well... I was going to kiss you.”

    “Why?”

    “Because I want to.”

“Why?” Charles repeated, feeling like his legs were going to give out.

“Is that not a good enough reason?” Max asked.

“What is wrong with you?” Seb accuses. “What are you looking at?”

Lewis flips the invitation around, holding it up to the screen so Seb can see it through FaceTime.

“Ah,” Seb says. “Yes, mine arrived yesterday. They’re eager, aren’t they?”

Lewis purses his lips, then pulls the invite away so he can read over it again.

Invite you to celebrate their wedding

“Do you think about getting married?” Seb asks.

Lewis can’t help his scoff. “Seb.”

“What?” Seb asks innocently. “You are 38 now, surely it is time to settle down.”

“And get some bees?” Lewis asks wryly, flipping the invitation over so it’s face down.

Seb shrugs. “There are worse things.”

Lewis struggles to swallow down the lump that’s suddenly formed in his throat. His shoulder aches, a phantom pain that his doctor says is more psychosomatic than ongoing complications.

“Yeah,” he agrees quietly. “I guess there are.”

    Summary

If he had to name the place where the story of Max and Charles began, if there was a moment that divided them into Before and After, there would be a few candidates.

But there was only one correct answer. He would never forget the name.

The place is called Val d’Argenton. Stories are still being written there.

Charles likes to tell the story of the incident - turn by turn, infused with poetic drama, detailing every single emotion: frustration, anger, pure spite. Every time he tells it, his smile grows along with the laughter in his eyes, even as his words recount a tale of opposing emotions.

“I never want to go back to Val d’Argenton,” Charles once confessed.

“We’ll never go back there,” he promised, and Charles knew what he meant.

    “How’s the plant?”

Kabru isn’t asking about just the plant.

Mithrun thinks of glittering blue eyes the colour of the sea on a sunny day. He thinks of crashing waves and muted laughter. Out of the corner of his eye, Kabru smiles to himself, taking in another deep breath of salted ocean air.

“I think it needs more sun time,” Mithrun mutters.

Kabru gives Mithrun a plant to take care of. Mithrun has no idea how to, so he just replicates the way he is taken care of.
