Summary
It is nearing dawn when she hears footsteps approaching from behind. Usually, Lae’zel is the first to wake, but Taiga is only slightly surprised when Karlach steps into the firelight.
She smiles in greeting and shuts her journal as Karlach sits on the log opposite hers.
“Can’t sleep?” Taiga asks.
“Way too hot. Think I sweat a tiny river into my bedroll.” Karlach yawns until her jaw pops. “Speaking of, can we turn this fire off?”
Taiga thinks of Shadowheart shivering beneath the weight of two blankets, then of Karlach, tossing uncomfortably in nothing but her leathers, and how, despite her efforts, she has not managed to help either of them. A terrible puzzle, and she is becoming increasingly distressed by the simple fact that in order to make one comfortable, she must disregard the other.---
On the nights that Taiga can't sleep, she finds solace in the quiet intimacy of campside conversation.
