Summary
She imagines holding her breath until she passes out. She shoves her face deeper into the pillow, and muffles a pathetic, wet sound of a sob in the laundry-detergent scent. Imagines dying, asphyxiating in Lynn’s ivory linen. She knows better, knows all too well the body’s awful determination to live, the way it will begin to kick and convulse, fighting for oxygen. Plastic in her hands, the reek of shit and death, Adam’s malnourished body managing to overpower her even in its weak, final moments. Scared lamb kicking and flailing in her arms, instinctive, violent. Even if she passes out, she will probably roll over and begin to breathe again whether she wants to or not.

Summary
“It’s… Don’t worry about it, hun. Just head back to sleep.” Lynn dips her head down, forces a smile, presses a kiss to the crown of Amanda’s head. “It was only a dream, I’m sorry for bothering you.”
Lynn hopes, desperately, that this can blow over, that it’ll go back to how it was, with her simmering in her own isolation, Amanda snoring away, probably drooling on her shirt. It’s easier that way. Maybe Amanda will forget it ever happened.
or: Sometimes love is a lazy handjob in the small hours of the night.

Summary
‘I just-’ She breathed shakily, another sob escaping, and she didn’t miss how Lynn’s hand tightened ever so slightly atop hers, offering another olive branch of reassurance out to her. ‘I just want him to be okay.’
‘He will be. He is.’ Lynn promised, and at that moment, Amanda didn’t care if her words were a doctor’s empty promise, the ones given to raise the spirits of sick children that didn’t actually have much hope left, but she held onto them tight, letting them unfurl the coils around her heart - giving her the chance to finally breathe for the first time in a good hour.
