“But,” Phainon said, voice lower now, more certain despite the way his pulse was still racing, “there is one thing though.”
Mydei didn’t pull away. “Mm, go on.”
“I…” he started, voice catching slightly as Mydei’s grip tightened just enough to make his brain briefly stop working. He forced himself to keep going anyway. “I could do so much better than this… version of me you’ve made up in your head.”
Mydei’s hands paused, though they didn’t move away.
“In your fantasies,” Phainon added, his voice dropping a little as he leaned closer without fully realizing he was doing it. “I could be so, so much better, Mydei.”
In which Phainon wakes up one day suddenly able to see everyone’s thoughts, including Mydei’s.

There's a flush to Flambae's neck and tiny flames flicker at the tips of his fingers—blink, and they're gone. Robert doesn't blink.
Robert's good at telling people what to do. Flambae's great at testing people's patience. It's a casual arrangement that Robert enters with a cool head and zero unresolved issues. Don't even worry about it.
