Summary
He’d never intended to stay out so late. Though he’d been away from his wife and son for less than a full day, it was the first time since his return that he’d spent more than an hour separated from one or both of them, and he was discovering that he disliked it immensely. No, it was more than that: every moment they were apart stabbed dual knifepoints of worry and yearning through his heart.
Odysseus is late returning to the palace one night. Penelope waits up, doing her best to conceal her unease from her son. It doesn't work. None of them can yet drive off the fear that has been their faithful companion of twenty years.

Summary
Rumours spread like locusts through the palace after the Queen of Attolia’s political marriage. Speculation about the new king’s purportedly empty bed was a subject of particular relish to the gossip-mongers, and, although none would give speech to such vulgarity in the queen’s presence, Attolia was well aware of the rumours. She had ears for listening, after all, and where those ears could not reach, she had informants.
It amused her that, for once, the gossipers were not entirely wrong. For the king’s bed was indeed empty many nights—empty of the king himself.
Set in the early days after the marriage of Attolia to the Thief of Eddis: in which the newlyweds are secretly affectionate, the attendants ignorant, Eugenides commits a spot of thievery, and Attolia gets the best of the bargain.

Summary
The storm woke him in the night. For a moment he felt the rocking of the raft underneath him, could almost taste the salt and blood in the air—but then he felt the soft brush of linen sheets against his skin, the warmth of Penelope’s body curled beside him, the scent of her hair. He was not at sea. The storm was outside.
It was a while before he could breathe normally again.
Odysseus can't sleep, and, despite himself, ends up on the balcony in the pouring rain. That's where Penelope finds him.

Summary
The first thing the Queen of Attolia does on her wedding night is get into a fierce argument with her groom. Voices are raised, inkpots are thrown, and a stalemate is reached. But that isn't the end of it. Because beyond the political contracts and burdens of royal duty, this is still a marriage between two people.
(In which the king's wedding night proceeds rather differently than the infamous and apocryphal song lyrics composed by Dite would tell it.)
Canon compliant. Contains spoilers for The King of Attolia, although it is technically set just before Chapter 1 of that unsurpassed novel.
