Summary

Odysseus draws the arrow back. The bow fits in his hands like an extra bit of his body. He is as attuned to the fine hum of its string in the way anyone comes to learn the thrum of their own nerves. Palintonos is the word for what his bow is. An instrument that stretches backwards.

Every step away from a prophecy is a step toward it, like walking on a backward map. Odysseus tries to get out of going to war.
