Summary
The night before their wedding, they kneel in the dirt of the forest that borders the palace. They sing hymns to her under their breath. They burn offerings, pour honeyed wine and perfumed oil into the smouldering embers. And then, Odysseus hears that metallic ring in the air.

Odysseus draws the arrow back. The bow fits in his hands like an extra bit of his body. He is as attuned to the fine hum of its string in the way anyone comes to learn the thrum of their own nerves. Palintonos is the word for what his bow is. An instrument that stretches backwards.
