“Martin.” Jon stops. “You’re…trans, right?”
Martin stiffens, all the blessed peace that the past few minutes have given him evaporating as his brain shoots off in two separate directions. First is—well, terror, obviously. You take a naturally anxious person and they end up trans, not exactly a recipe for a lot of restful nights, thanks. Jon’s never given any indication that he might be transphobic, never calling Martin by the wrong name even though he hadn’t been able to legally get it changed until six months after he started working at the Archives, and he didn’t so much as blink when he saw Sasha pass a tampon to Martin one time. But still. Martin and fear are old, old friends.
The second direction is just mild incredulity at the tentativeness of the question. No, Jon, I’ve had a transgender pride flag on my desk for the past two years just because I liked the colours.
Martin gets a call from Jon. Nothing about what follows goes anything like the way he expected.

“Should we get married?” Jon asks as Martin strides through the living room. He’s been sitting on the couch for most of the afternoon with his nose buried in his laptop, filling the house with furious tapping as Martin busies himself with repairing the kitchen sink. Or rather, trying to repair the kitchen sink. It’s not that complicated, he tells himself after his fifth (or sixth, or seventh) youtube video — just twist this and loosen...that, and maybe...hammer this...? The point is, he’s been doing a lot of trial and error. And yes, water is still coming out of one of the knobs, but at least it seems like less water than before...?
The point is, when Jon says this apropos of absolutely nothing, Martin nearly spills the sports drink he’s chugging all down the front of his shirt, and while that definitely would complete the whole “unintentionally slutty plumber” look he’s got going on, he doesn’t want to have to do another load of laundry today.
“I’m sorry,” Martin says once he’s stopped coughing like a consumptive patient, “what?”Martin can't say that either of them have given much thought to tying the knot.

Of course he’d noticed Jon’s wrists. Of course he’d noticed the red rings around them of still-new skin, the way that he rubbed at them constantly until they were a bright, raw pink. For all the Jonathan Sims typical powers of denial and repression, he wasn’t a subtle man in the slightest.
Of course Martin said yes, when Jon had asked. It’d been such a vulnerable spot to show, and how could Martin say no?There are three things Martin had never imagined in a million years would be in his bed: 1. Jon, 2. a pretty blue rope, and 3. Jon in said pretty blue rope.
