Wheeling around to the familiar voice, Noel saw Paul Weller. Paul fucking Weller, having apparently having sought Noel out. Quickly, he schooled the disbelief off his face and aimed for his more casual, crooked smile.

And then he sees him.
Perched on one of the spare amps, just out of reach, there’s a teenage boy sitting with his legs dangling, trainers scuffed, fringe falling into his eyes. Sixteen, maybe seventeen. Noel knows that boy — knows the slope of his shoulders, the guarded expression that pretends not to care. It’s him. Younger, smaller, watching with the same mix of boredom and anticipation he used to feel just lazing out on his bed thinking of chords, when he was still just a lad with a brand-less guitar and a head full of songs.

Didn’t matter whether he left a message or not; either way he’d find the number failed to connect the next time he tried. It'd happened before, only he’d promised Mam even more earnestly this time around that he’d save the number only for emergencies.
“Hello,” said Noel, low and gruff.
It was a voice that had every expectation of being disappointed, and Liam wasn’t so sure he wouldn’t. “Hiya, Noel.”
