Summary
Following on immediately from the events of MyStrangerInTheNight, Mulder & Scully have a painful journey back to each other after being separated by a criminal that demands Mulder's attention. Guilt and trauma are brought to the surface as long-buried truths finally come to light.
Their love is one that endures and overcomes, and they lean on each other for comfort and support as they navigate the uneven path of healing.
'Mulder swept through the scene, feeling like an outsider in his own home, struggling between the urge to crumple into a pile on the floor by her shoes, and the practised instinct to catalogue evidence.
Looking at any part of their life together as pieces of evidence made his hands clench painfully and his mouth dry out.
He wanted to be able to detach, to observe and compile clues, but then the sight of her keys, her cardigan, or her half-finished cup of tea would gut him and threaten to bring him to his knees.
The apartment was foggy with memories, too dark for him to see a thing. The scene was covered in her.
