If Vi wasn’t going to study, Caitlyn would outpace her by sheer preparation. She’d take extra notes, attend every optional lecture, even dig into obscure research papers that their professor had only hinted at during office hours. Vi might breeze through on charm and natural talent, but Caitlyn had the power of discipline on her side.
The only problem? Discipline didn’t account for Vi.
They're the best students from their major, and Caitlyn is going insane because Vi never studies and still ends up getting better grades than her, who is running on coffee and sleepless nights 24/7. And they were roommates.

"Vi." she whimpered again. “Violet, please.”
A tear escaped from the corner of her eyes, being wiped away with a kiss. Her body was at the peak of physical deprivation, and her mind was fighting against the words being said to her. Fighting against a truth her heart had known for a long time.

"Admit it, Cait, that this... us," Vi said, giving another kiss and wiping away another stubborn tear. "It means so much more."

She found Caitlyn's facial features striking, but in the best of ways that she couldn't describe; she felt like she knew them all so well. Her partner's strong, chiseled jawline, to that fine, long bridge of her nose—her nose was so cute. Those perfect lips that lay slightly agape, exposing the small tooth gap between her front teeth. How perfect could one woman be?

“Shut the fuck up.” Vi scolded, rendering Caitlyn mute once more. “Don’t you dare say that about yourself. You’re worth fighting for, Caitlyn.”

She leaned out the window, her hair dampening in the rain. “Vi, just come inside! You’ll get sick!” she shouted, her voice carrying a note of urgency.
Vi shook her head stubbornly, rain running in rivulets down her face. “No! I need to say what I have to say, and then I’ll leave. You won’t have to see me again. You can just forget all about me.”
Her tone was strong, but Caitlyn could hear the crack beneath it, the vulnerability that made her breath hitch.
“What are you talking about?” Caitlyn shouted back, bewildered. None of this made sense, and the storm wasn’t helping her focus.OR

Caitlyn tries to cope with life after the loss of her left eye. As she does this, she soon feels overwhelmed by the weight of her choices, her actions, and the mark it left on her. Vi soon realizes just how badly Caitlyn was affected by what Ambessa had done to her, and is determined to help her pull through, by reminding her why she fell in love with her, and why nothing will ever change how she feels about her cupcake.

Everything she was, had been, wanted to be, was sewn into the fabric of the responsibilities she shouldered from the moment Powder had emerged screaming, and again when the circle of life had constricted like a deadly snake and Vi had seen her mother’s eyes without life, and then again when she became a leader, a role model for her siblings, a dependable daughter for Vander.
Somewhere, in the tangle of tragedy following the echoed footfalls of a certain prissy enforcer, Vi began to believe there was more to herself than being Powder’s sister. Vander’s daughter.
Vi couldn’t tell you how or when the shift occurred, but she could tell you the root of it.
Said root stood in the entrance of their closet, tall and lanky and beautiful.
