    Summary

“Not to sound ungrateful, but being here makes me wish that you had left me for dead,” said Harrow.

Gideon had been staring hard at the face of the fountain’s statue. She was pretty sure that it was carved in the likeness of Naberius himself, but she didn’t want to say it out loud and make it true. She shook her head and turned to Harrow. “Leaving me to live out eternity in your bony sock puppet of a body? Hard pass.”

Palamedes and Camilla shared a look. It was the mutual understanding of two people who had been trapped in close quarters with the bickering of Gideon Nav and Harrowhark Nonagesimus for far too long.

“My parents are-- indisposed.” The child hardly faltered, though she barely made a speck of black cloak against the decrepit armored bulk of her retainer. “I act in their stead.”

Abigail drew a deep breath. Dead, then. She was sure of it, but she would gain nothing by forcing the child to admit it. “I do not come as a pilgrim, Reverend Daughter. I come to seek the aid of the Ninth House. Will you help me?”

At the behest of the very young newly-minted Master Warden, Lady Abigail Pent arrives on Drearburh to ask the Reverend Mother and Father for help. Instead, she finds two girls in desperate need of parents.

They won’t let her help, but the young Reverend Daughter is willing to bargain.

    Summary

Mira raises an eyebrow. “You violently flinching and crashing into the wall is nothing?”

Rumi winces. She doesn’t want to lie, but how is she supposed to tell the truth?

How is she supposed to tell them that the night of the idol awards won’t leave her mind?

That it’s their faces—twisted and vicious—that has her shaking in the middle of the night, holding back tears.

That she knows in her soul that it wasn’t them on that stage but her mind can’t seem to forget the stupid smirks, the rough hands, the fucking song—and her body can’t help but flinch, can’t help the hammering that starts in her chest, can’t help the sweat the builds up in her back as her entire body locks up.

    She can’t tell them that.

    OR

Rumi’s haunted by the night of the Idol Awards. Memories of sharp, cruel words whispered into her ears; of light glinting off the blades she’d always fought beside as they were pointed at her.

But Rumi’s a coward and a fool and refuses to tell the two closest people in her life what's bothering her.

They notice, though, and luckily for Rumi, Mira and Zoey care far too much to let her suffer alone.

    Summary

Looking out at the city felt like looking out at a sea of blood. A chilling reminder of what was at stake, of the damage that had been done in so little time. Yet with a perfect view of the threads of their hard-crafted honmoon tearing loose, Mira somehow never considered those threads tearing loose inside their own home.

As soon as Mira steps out of the living room to get water and feels that breathless drop in her chest that comes with the wavering, rippling connection to a fraying honmoon– too fresh and tumultuous to be an echo of a distant tear- she knows something has gone horribly wrong.

When she wakes again—salt in her mouth and bells ringing in her ears— she's standing in a village far too familiar, and greeted by vibrant purple hair and golden eyes, frightened and unrecognizing.

    Summary

So mostly it seems like Rumi’s doing well. She wears her patterns openly, almost defiantly. She stops locking herself away in her room. When she wakes in the middle of the night, breathless and panicked from haunting dreams, she lets Zoey find her and guide her to Mira’s room so they can all crawl into bed together, Rumi sandwiched in the middle.

But there are some moments when she loses herself a little, when Zoey can see her teeth clench and her eyes glaze over. Moments when her breath shakes, and she presses her nails so deep into her palms that they come away bloody.

She won't talk to them when it happens.
