Wei Wuxian stared down at the decree in disbelief before glaring into the distance at the Cloud Recesses Imperial Palace—which, by the way, was sparkling way too brightly for seven in the morning.
Jiang Cheng’s face was visibly agitated as Nie Huaisang scanned the scroll over and over again in a futile attempt to make the words disappear.
What gave the Emperor—regardless of how enchanting his looks were rumored to be and his constant benevolence for the people—to instill the rules everyone at the palace was expected to follow?
This was uncalled for, and Wei Wuxian would not stand for it.

And through it all, Wei Wuxian had sat there, waiting and waiting and waiting.
But the door had never opened.
Wei Wuxian’s fingers had curled into the silk sheets, the soft fabric wrinkling beneath his touch. He had listened. Every creak of the palace walls, every distant footstep, his heart had leapt. But it had never been Lan Wangji.
He had waited until the candles had burned to their bases.
Then he had waited longer.
By the time the first pale light of dawn had filtered through the embroidered curtains, it had been clear. Lan Wangji would not come.
