He isn’t sure what kind of greeting he’s expecting from Steve - they’ve always bounced back and forth between sarcasm and sincerity with each other, depending on the moment and the mood and what they feel like - but somehow the soft little “Hey, Ed,” spoken just loudly enough to be on the right side of too quiet, isn’t what he’d expected. He feels himself dissolve a little.
“Stevie,” he drawls, and the slight sarcasm of it feels like it’s getting them back on track. Steve takes a step forwards to meet him, and then they’re holding onto each other and Eddie kind of wants to cry because goddamnit, Steve still wears the same goddamn cologne and he still hugs Eddie with that delicate balance of gentleness and something more jock-ish and firm. It feels like it’s been only days and like it’s been a million years all at once, and for a single, infinitely brief moment he wishes so deeply it could break him that he’d never ever left.
