    Summary

“Guys, Mike’s not like me, he just can’t name characters.” They both give him a pointed look, clearly not believing a word. “I’m serious, every character is a reference to someone we know.”
“Are they now?” Dustin raises an eyebrow at him.
“Yes!” Will is perhaps a bit exasperated, “Stephen and Jay are clearly Steve and Robin, and James is Hopper,” at the blank look they give him, he clarifies, “his first name is Jim.”
This somehow only makes Lucas seem more unimpressed, “okay, but you do see how that’s more suspicious right?”
“What? That Mike can’t come up with names?”
“No,” Lucas shakes his head and clasps Will in the shoulder, “that the first name Mike thought to cannibalize when coming up with a boyfriend for you was his own”.

The party grows closer after Will moves in with the Wheelers, picking up D&D again. It all goes well until Mike introduces a new character, Sir. Gabriel Whepler, whose sole purpose seems to be flirting with Will.

    Summary

Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.

From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.

This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.

will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

    Summary

“I don’t think that it has to mean that you’re into guys,” Lucas says. His words are accompanied by a casual shrug, and said in the tone of someone who has clearly already given this subject some thought. Will doesn’t know what to do with that information. Jump from a building, maybe. “I mean, we’d all get flustered if Spider-Man carried us in his arms.”

Mike points to him enthusiastically. “Thank you, Lucas.”

Dustin looks between the two of them, his eyes narrowed.

    “...Would we?”

“Sure,” Mike concludes. “He’s attractive. That’s not a weird thing to think.”

Will just barely resists the urge to bang his head against the table. He feels Dustin’s eyes glued to his burning face, and sinks even further down his chair.

In which Mike tells Spider-Man that he has a crush on his best friend, and Will jumps to some very wrong conclusions.

    Summary

“I know you don’t like to talk about it, but— can you explain it?” Mike asked. “Your… episodes?”

His mute episodes, as Dr. Owens called them. Will wasn’t sure how to describe it. It was just… fear. A sense of doom. An inability. Something that was as instinctive as breathing.

“It’s like…” he said, then paused in thought. He was really no good with words. “Like, I’m stuck.”

Will Byers was a bright, energetic, outgoing kid— until he wasn’t. His ability to socialize deteriorated slowly. No one thought it was anything serious; not until it was too late. His selective mutism had already taken over his mind.
