“It’s been too long!” she says, as if they hadn’t just met again, and she reaches a hand out to them. Suddenly they’re seven years old again, chasing leaves and shouting songs and laughing, following a melody of naive childhood joy. “Come with me. There’s so much you need to see.”

Against their better judgment they reach their hand out and let her take them away. Maybe then they will go to someplace brighter and full of song and laughter and less regret—so many things they wish they knew in the years they’d lost. In a place where they reunite before they reached that ninth symphony. Because now that finale crescendos and declines, and in that dying breath the curtain falls over them and their stories conclude.
