Summary
Lance doesn’t know which of his emotions is more overpowering; the secondhand embarrassment he feels at how blatantly obvious they’re being, or the fact that watching Max and Charles in their own little world is actually kind of cute.
He realizes it’s the secondhand embarrassment as he watches Max shamelessly grin at James and proudly explain that he was just talking to Charles.
Lance has to resist the urge to roll his eyes, especially when he notices how Charles is quite literally the embodiment of the heart eyes emoji where he’s standing next to Max for his entire interview. And the beeline Charles makes for Max as soon as he hands the microphone to Lance after his P2 interview is even worse than the heart eyes.
He definitely should have been paying attention to that group chat, Jesus fucking Christ.

Summary
It's like he wakes up in increments. First, the sound of the machines, again, droning on and on. Then voices, hushed but urgent. Then the pain, an insistent throb in his calf, his collarbone, his wrists. Finally, he opens his eyes and he sees that he is lying in a hospital bed.
He remembers next to nothing. Well, he remembers some things, some very random facts and a few important things from his childhood- like his family's faces, who they are (thank fuck he remembers that). He knows most general knowledge, like NFL rules and how to cook spaghetti and how to park a car, but has no memory attached to these facts. He knows all the Formula 1 world champions from when he was three to around age twelve. (Schumacher for five years in a row, Fernando Alonso twice, then Raikkonen, Hamilton, Button. Still got it.) But other than that- not much.
Lance wakes up from a crash and forgets.

Charles doesn't remember a time when he wasn't cold (when his soulmate wasn't cold) so there's never been a time when he didn't know he has a soulmate. And he knows that it's nearly impossible to find your soulmate, but on a rainy track in Belgium, he sees his biggest rival shivering and he just knows. And if it takes a couple tries to get him to believe, he's willing to wait.
If Max wants to become a World Champion one day, he can't have a soulmate. Or at least, that's what his dad tells him, that soulmates are a weakness, and he will never be able to win if he has one, especially if his soulmate is on the grid. So when his only real competition walks up to him and says they're soulmates, what else is he supposed to do but deny it with everything he has?
All the great Formula One rivals are rumored to be soulmates, but no one told them that in reality, racing against a soulmate means potentially losing them in one way or the other.

Or, 5 times Charles tried to convince Max they were soulmates, and 1 time he didn't need to.
