Summary
Mid-October, 2007. True to form, Josh and Donna can't agree on when to celebrate their anniversary.
He frowns back at her. ‘Wait. Hang on. What day are you saying is our anniversary?’
‘October 17th. The day we first kissed,’ she says, setting her sights on his chips again. ‘Why, what’re you saying?’
‘I thought November 6th.’
She makes her selection from the bag after several seconds of contemplation and raises her eyebrows at him. ‘You’re counting the first time we slept together?’
‘Yeah, I—’ He breaks off, explaining hastily, ‘Not—not in a—a lecherous way; it was just, y’know. It seemed—obvious.’
Her expression is wry as she pops the chip in her mouth. ‘I’ll bet it did.’
‘It was a very special night!’ he exclaims, a little high-pitched.

Summary
And it wasn’t that there weren’t plenty of pretty girls in nice dresses at the fundraiser they were currently at, attempting to shmooze their way into raising more money for the Bartlet campaign. He wasn’t an idiot, he had eyes. None of them looked like her though, in the black dress she was donning, and her hair practically cascading down her back as she threw her head back and laughed at something that CJ just said. If he was smart he would be walking away from her now, possibly find Sam or Toby, maybe flirt with a rich donor who couldn’t resist funneling money into their campaign after talking to him. He just continued walking towards Donna instead.

Something about the envelope catches his eye, so he pulls it out to take a look. At first glance, the name on the check looks to be incorrect – it’s a lot longer than ‘Donna Moss’. But when he removes the check from the folder to verify the name on the front, he notices something interesting.
The check is addressed to Donnatella Moss.

Summary
The words are printed in neat black print. Only a few lines. It takes about six read-throughs for it to sink in. Her pulse is in her ears and something is stinging behind her eyes. She clears her throat, stumbling away from her desk chair.
“Josh?” she calls, grabbing hold of the glass wall to steady herself as she comes closer to his office doorway.
There isn’t an answer right away so she tries again.
“Josh!”

Summary
“Why would I think you were?”
He opens his mouth to respond — to deflect, to deny, to distract her with a joke. But the way she’s looking up at him gives him pause. Something about the way Donna is smiling nervously, almost hopeful, something in her eyes that tells him she knows what he’s too scared to say and there’s a real possibility she feels the same. And maybe it’s the soft glow of the Christmas lights behind her, maybe it’s the way she looks so soft in her ridiculous Christmas sweater with her hair falling gently around her shoulders, or maybe it’s just because he’s loved her for a long time and he’s tired of pretending otherwise.
“I meant—“ Josh cuts himself off with a weak chuckle, licks his lips nervously as he rounds the desk, comes to a stop in front of her. “I meant don’t go with Jack. Stay here with me.”

Summary
“I’m worried about Josh,” Donna opens with, quiet but certain, her head angled down and hands fidgeting in her lap. She clears her throat, meets his gaze. “He’s not been himself recently.”
“In what way?” Leo asks gently, and there’s something reassuring about the look on his face, the sincerity in his eyes, the fact that he doesn’t seem at all surprised to see her.

Hi, 11CI hope this isn’t too rude, but maybe you could ask someone to help you with your coffee maker, then maybe you wouldn’t need to bash it and yell at it at 5:30 every morning. Just a thought? I know we all need our caffeine, maybe you could get yours a little less violently?
Thanks,

Summary
Josh pulled back after Germany. A full 180 from the weird closeness they developed in the hospital, to a purely professional coolness. Josh asks how she is, sometimes, but that’s it. Otherwise, they exist in this liminal space where none of their usual chatter and banter fills up the silence, and Josh lets her go at normal times.
Sitting at her desk, digging for Advil in her purse and wondering if the intern she yelled at's crying in the bathroom, Donna rubs her neck and blinks back her own tears.
She’s never felt more alone.

Summary
“You do realize you don’t need to answer the phone like that when you’re not in the office, right?” His smile lingered on his lips as he said these words.
“I need to practice so when I get back I’m not totally useless,” she said, “The least I can do is answer phones correctly considering you’ll be wheeling me around.”
“Ah yes, all the power will be mine,” he grinned widely, and he could just picture the eye-roll he was eliciting on the other end of the phone.
“Is there a reason you called, Joshua? Or was it just to brag that you are the superior human because you have two fully functioning leg?”
(or, a series of phone calls between Josh and Donna while Donna is at home recovering after Gaza)
