Summary
Jason had noticed her before - the sickly young woman studying in the library. They were in the same lectures sometimes. Of course, it was just his luck that when he finally spoke to her the university went into lockdown. What isn’t his usual luck is that, somehow, Elizabeth becomes his friend – and that she is falling in love with Jason Wayne, Ordinary Man. Theirs becomes a story about falling in love with unexpected people at unexpected times, facing an obstacle nothing which Jason can do nothing to remove.

Back then, he’d sat on a wobbly stool behind the register, flipping through a motorcycle catalog and pretending not to care that the scent of lilies mixed with pot and mildew gave him a headache. He’d been eleven, maybe twelve, when she shoved an apron at him and said, “Don’t touch the till, kid. Just keep the cops outta my ass.”
