Luz had grown up in the small town called Bonesborough, working as an adventure guide for someone calling herself the owl lady while simultaneously trying to get herself through college. Amity just moved to study at Hexide and participate in the Titan contest. The one hundred-mile, wilderness survival competition.
A contest against time, exertion and the ability to work under pressure while moving through wildlife - that if you're not careful - would most likely kill you.
After a sudden rule change that forces everyone to go in pairs, Luz and Amity end up together. The need to work as a team while having wildly different ways of doing things is… well, you can just say it creates a lot of tension.

That is exactly what would have happened if you hadn't found me first! I don’t even know how I would be able to tell which way I was supposed to be searching! And- and-”
“I stepped back onto the train convinced that I was going to spend the rest of my life stuck there. Searching forever and ever, with no idea if you were even still alive and a number that would just keep going up and up and up the longer it took to find you.”
