"All I've ever wanted is commitment," Steve answered, and the seriousness in his tone felt like a bucket of cold water. This was a soft spot, a sensitive topic. Eddie hadn't meant to push at Steve’s buttons, not for real.
He pushed at Steve's knee again, a cautious attempt at comfort, then leaned back on the couch.
"We don't always get what we want, I suppose." And wasn't that just a little too close to home?
"Sometimes we do, though."

Just as he begins to untangle his headphones, small hands with messy purple nail polish land on his leg.
He looks up. In front of him stands a little—kid, with dark hair that frames their face with tight little curls. Their hair is haphazardly pulled back with bright green clips and their dinosaur shirt hangs baggy on their thin shoulders. No older than six, they examine him with huge, dark eyes. He cocks his head and smiles as the child mimics him.
“Samwise the Brave, what have I said about running away from Daddy like that, huh?”
He looks up from the brown eyes in front of him and meets a nearly-identical pair.
He blinks. “Eddie?”
Eddie Munson, nine years older, hair just as long, curling around his shoulders—those are broader than they to be—blinks back. “Steve?”---

He swallows, hard. Swallowing down every aching desire he has to kiss Steve right now.
Steve’s eyes flash up to Eddie, just for a second, and Eddie thinks he’s letting him know it’s okay. Eddie wants to touch him, soothe him, so badly.
He hovers his fingertips over the scar. “Can I?” Eddie asks quietly. He’s nervous, voice and fingers shaking.
“Yes,” Steve whispers back.
OR
Steve has been visiting Eddie in secret at the cabin for over a month. Their routine has evolved into dinner, music and now, teaching Steve guitar.
