Essek helps the M9 in Aeor as another tally in a mounting ledger of favours and returns home afterwards. Caleb works with Beauregard to rid the Cerberus Assembly of corruption and finds himself entangled in murky operations with fewer and fewer clear answers.
Between the two of them, something blossoms. Essek looks forward to their next visit, knowing that he will not see Caleb for a good few weeks afterwards.

He feels naked. He feels the way he did the first time Pumat Sol spelled him clean.

At that, Caleb raises his glass. “And I as well. Although…” The wine sloshes, ruby red and glinting, as he sets the glass down and rises from the floor. “Maybe it’s not just the theory I’m interested in, right now.”
As Essek starts going on adventures with the Mighty Nein, his relationship with Caleb has still a few kinks that need to be ironed out.

"It is a pleasure to see you again, Master Thelyss," Trent says in an entreating voice. "It has been so long! Imagine my surprise when my Volstrucker found you skulking about the Biting North."
The spell does not compel a reply, so Essek does not dignify this false pleasantry with a rejoinder.
Trent smiles and takes a sip of his wine. It shines ruby red in the dim gold of the candlelight.
