After a misunderstanding derailed the prospect of negotiations between Vere and Akielos, the princes of the two countries began scheming to find a way to return their parents to the table. When their parents became suspicious of any contact the princes had with each other, Laurent decided the best strategy for communication was for him and Damen to pretend to be courting. Damen worries about convincing outsiders their relationship is real. He should be worrying instead about convincing himself it isn’t.

With royalty from five countries gathered in Vask for a month of festivities surrounding a rare planetary convergence, hopes are high that the Veretian and Akielon delegations will take advantage of the festival to begin negotiations to resolve the volatile situation on their contested border. But a cultural misunderstanding quickly leads to a grave insult between the courts, and any hope for negotiations seems lost.
Laurent is stubborn, and full of schemes, and not willing to give up on the prospect of negotiations. And surely between the four of them, he, Auguste, Damen, and Kastor can convince their families to apologize and return to the negotiating table—through reason or scheming or whatever means necessary.

Down there are men Laurent trained with in boyhood. Down there are weapons instructors, friends, maybe every guardsman who ever stood before his rooms in Arles. His father. Auguste. Laurent stops himself from looking over the fields to spot the gold-on-blue of his brother’s banner. He wonders, not for the first time, whether Auguste thinks he is fighting to rescue Laurent or to recapture him.
For all of this--the soldiers, the ships, the wounded, the dying, the grain left in the fields with too few farmers left at home to harvest it--is in some way about him. They are here to reclaim him, to return him to hearth and home at whatever cost. To do so, some were willing to travel hundreds of miles. To do so, all are willing to burn Ios to the ground.
