Maki watches in dismay, his stomach dropping as the stranger breathes through obvious pain. He didn’t think he’d run into him that hard but apparently he did.
“I can’t believe this. Were you trying to kill me?”
"Kill you? No. Of course not. It was an accident. I just--"
"Just what?" The stranger shakes his head. “He tried to kill me,” he says, voice incredulous, looking at the dog kibble spilled all around him on the sidewalk. “Seriously. Wow.”
Maki’s immediate guilt-packed I am so sorry is stopped mid-breath when the boy looks up, flashing the most stunning anger-dimples Maki’s ever seen on anyone in his life. His mouth goes dry, a sharp jolt knocking every coherent thought in his head clean out of his brain.
