She looked up at her, eyes bright, and said, “Told you I was built for a life of crime.”
JJ had laughed so hard she choked on the rain.
God, she’d forgotten how good it feels to laugh with Emily. It’s like warming your hands on a stove you thought was broken.
She says, “I have tea at home. And Henry was asking for you. You could—”
Emily cuts in gently, a small smile playing on her lips. “You know I will, Jayj.”

JJ had always used work and routines to help process her grief.
JJ had also disobeyed Emily’s direct orders, and she realised that maybe she’d came back to work too soon after Will’s death.
Emily hadn’t meant for her joke to go sideways. JJ hadn’t meant to snap when her feelings did a one eighty. Love was messy. It was messier when you’ve been yearning for each other subconsciously (or not) for twenty years.
