Ever since Pokke’s win at the Derby, it was as if time itself had stopped. Even all the way into summer camp, her ears were still ringing from the roar of the crowd, her throat still burning from her triumphant, disbelieving scream. This was everything she had ever wanted, everyone kept telling her, aren’t you thrilled?
It doesn’t feel real, does it?
Nevertheless, her anxieties kept eating away at her. Those what-if’s that still haunted her, the ones she tried not to think about. Then one night at summer camp, in the moments before sleep would overtake her, Pokke let her guard down long enough for one little wish to emerge from those shadows.
