“Yes,” Ilya says carefully. “We’re friends.”
Which is true. Technically. In the same way the sky is technically blue. Troy nods, like he’s confirming something he already knew. He takes a sip of his beer, then exhales, a quick huff of air that might be courage.
“Do you think-” he says, and then stops, grins awkwardly. “This is stupid.”
“Just say it,” Ilya replies, a little too quickly.
Troy laughs. “Okay. Do you think I could get his number?”
The words land wrong. Hard. For a second, he worries his heart has stopped. Ilya turns slowly, fixing Troy with a look that’s supposed to be neutral. Captain neutral. Inside, something hot and sharp twists in his chest.

Not until Rose convinces (forces) him to look at a Sugar Daddy app, somewhere he can find an older man to pay him to be friends, talk, hang-out, or more. What is Shane to do?

“Did I do something wrong?”
“No. No, Hollander,” Ilya coughed, eyes flitting around the room. “Is just– Is too much.”
“This is… too much?” Shane repeated slowly, incredulously. “We see each other maybe once a month. Less, even.”
“No. Is not that– You are just,” Ilya swore under his breath in Russian. His accent was getting thicker, the words clunkier, in the way it always got stronger when he was frustrated or tired. Shane hated himself for recognizing it. “...too much.”
OR
In the Heated Rivalry book, Ilya intends to break things off with Shane the night of the All-Star Game, but then Shane gets hurt. What if Shane never gets injured by Marlow, and Ilya really does break things off?
(Basically, a shit ton of angst and Shane Hollander learning to love himself. There will be a happy ending!)

But loathing has always come easier than love, and once everything starts to unravel, Ilya learns there are only so many times you can choose peace before you are forced to show how far you’ll go to keep Shane Hollander to yourself.
