Summary
Jin Guangyao dies at the hand of his closest friend…and then wakes up in the room he once shared with his mother, a month before his fifteenth birthday. Determined to defy his previous fate, he takes his mother away to Laoling, where he blackmails Madam Qin into paying off Meng Shi's debt and giving them work in the Qin Sect.
Two years later, Meng Shi is Madam Qin's bosom companion, Meng Yao is Sect Leader Qin's head clerk and trusted right hand, and Laoling Qin's prospects are rising as they prepare to host a gathering of sects great and small. This is all very well and good, except for Meng Yao's failure to consider that such an event must inevitably lead to him coming face to face with his former life's closest companions and greatest regrets—that is, Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue.

As much as the course of celebration has tired him, he dreaded the ending of it more than anything else. The closing part involved coming down to speak to the guests and family, receive gifts and ask for grace, and what brought the most aggravation - choose an elder or those who were ready to step forward to provide supervision for the newlyweds and stay in for the wedding night to witness the moment of conception.
(Nie Huaisang marries Meng Yao and goes along with wedding traditions; they face struggles and receive some help along the way.)

Next to him, Jin Ling can feel Sizhui leaning forward, as entranced as he is. He can’t take his eyes off the two boys in the photo, and when he hears a haunting whisper behind him, even knowing it’s Wei Wuxian doesn’t stop a chill from skittering up his spine.
“Carpe… Carpe Diem.” The eyes of those long-dead boys seem to echo the words until Jin Ling is no longer so sure they aren’t the ones saying them. “Carpe Diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”
