“Can’t sleep. Memories, just,” Pete whirled his finger around next to his head, “Spinning, you know.”

Everything that Hunter feels is pain.
He does it all, does what he’s been taught to do all his life. Shakes his head like the good boy he is when Camila asks him if he’s in any pain anywhere, despite it being a lie. Sometimes lying is a noble thing if it means he’s less of an inconvenience to others than he already is. But Camila is not Belos or Philip or every other adult around him that’s failed him so terribly—Camila is a mother, and a mother sees right through all his bullshit.

Hunter hadn’t moved from his spot of staring down at his lap, but he was clenching his hands close to his chest now. “I have seven days.”
The man furrowed his brows. “What do you mean? Seven days until what?”
He didn’t answer, he just stared down blankly, biting his lip as a tear made its way down his cheek.
Darius’ eyes widened as the puzzle pieces started clicking together. Illegal potion dealers. Time constraint. Ending Elixir. Seven days.
They’d given Hunter a poison potion.
Hunter was going to die.
Hunter was poisoned and had seven days to live. Maybe less.
He was going to die.
“...Darius?”
OR: Hunter gets poisoned, and he and Darius have a week to try and prevent it.

Summary
Hunter isn’t used to adults being kind to him, or anyone older than him, really. They ignore him at best and loath him at worst, and the only adult he thought truly loved him lied and more. He is used to being pushed aside, put down, held to a standard he will never reach, but he’s used to it by now. He's used to adults being like that.
Camila, as she will come to be in most things, is the exception.
