“I’m gonna marry him.” Henry gestures at the man leaning against the bar, grinning so brightly it puts the mirrorball to shame. Pez’s eyes follow his gaze and his brows climb to his forehead.
“Darling,” he says gently, “I’m pretty sure Alexander has a girlfriend.”
The corners of Henry’s lips twitch, but he doesn’t let that get to him. He takes a sip of his drink, letting the warmth spread in his chest. A smile spreads on his face.
“Sounds to me like they haven’t tied the knot yet.”
Or, the one in which Henry works hard to sweep Alex off his feet, not realizing Alex is already halfway in love.

“Er…” he says – a faintly bewildered expression on his face. “Yes, I imagine so.”
Turns out the guy is also British, which is like, whatever. Alex gives him one of his best smiles. “Great, thanks.”
Hot Barista glances vaguely around himself, then back to Alex. He looks simultaneously surprised and uncertain, like some kind of aggressively handsome time-traveller who’s been unexpectedly yeeted into a different century. After a beat, he says – “From me?”
“Uh yeah. You’re working here, right?”
“Well... yes?”
Alex tries very hard not to sigh.
Great. Looks like he’s dealing with one of those people who are so attractive, they’ve never had the need to develop any kind of personality beyond that of a Tupperware container of room-temperature potato salad.
Alex absolutely does not have time for whatever this shit is.***
Five times Henry serves Alex coffee and one time Alex serves Henry.
Strap in, folks. It's a coffee shop AU ...Kind of.

Alex nods. “I get that.” He pauses. “You know you can talk to me if you need to, right? If things aren’t great.”
Henry’s face softens, his shoulders relaxing a bit. “I know,” he murmurs. “Thanks.”
He turns back to the television, and Alex forces himself to do the same. He tears his gaze away from Henry’s profile and focuses on their Star Wars marathon again, refusing to acknowledge how cuddly Henry looks in soft pajamas and fuzzy, mismatched socks. Alex’s heart leaps in his chest anyway.
He knew having a crush on his roommate would be confusing, frustrating, and borderline heartbreaking. None of that stopped him.

Summary
“Kinda cliché,” Alex says, looking up at the mural.
“It’s Bea’s favourite piece,” Henry says.
Alex looks at him, “that makes sense.”
They travel through a plethora of shops. Henry picks up a hat, Alex holds a jumper to his chest and twirls until Henry is giggling into his fingers.
“Why do they never have my size?” Alex laments, holding a nice pair of shoes that don’t come in seven and a half. Only seven or eight. Henry doesn’t mean to laugh, he didn’t really think that was something he did. Laugh at people’s expense. But he isn’t doing that. Alex is pouting over a pair of shoes, with wide brown eyes and slumped shoulders, and Henry is laughing at the absurdity of it all.
He never thought that the man across the building cradling a beer to his chest was the type to pout and whine when a shop didn’t carry his size. He never thought he’d find that out. He never thought that stranger from that bar would turn into someone he knows.
“You’re a dick,” Alex says, but he’s grinning and Henry is weak.

It happens on a random morning in May when Alex, age fourteen, pads into the kitchen to greet his mother and steal a waffle from June's plate and sees a man sitting at their breakfast counter, reading a newspaper, a cup of coffee raised to his lips. Like he belongs. Like it's the most natural thing in the world. June doesn't seem to give the man a second thought. She merely flicks Alex on the forehead and takes back the waffle. Ellen isn't worrying, either. In fact, she's talking to him. Asking what his schedule is like. Making plans for dinner.
Alex has never seen this man before in his life.
