When he was twelve, Kaeya told Diluc he would always look out for him. It was a childish promise then, spoken with the kind of confidence only someone who believed the world was simple could have. But the years had a way of testing promises. They grew up, drifted apart, and eventually stopped speaking altogether. Too much had happened between them.
And yet the promise didn’t go away. It changed over time, into something more complex.
At twenty-three, Kaeya still looks out for him just not in the way people would expect.
Because the truth is simple: you never really know the people closest to you.
