Summary
Fleeing Gelvaan is mostly a blur.
Imogen tries not to dwell on the consequences; doesn’t really have time to, quite honestly. The hand clasped in her own is cold and clammy, trembling slightly with what Imogen assumes might be fear, though she can’t be sure if it’s because of her or the situation in general.
And it’s fine, really. If Laudna is afraid of her then that’s fine. Just as long as she can get her to safety and they can part ways without any more bloodshed; that’s all Imogen could ask for.

Summary
As soon as the door locks behind her with a click, Imogen falls back against it, head tilted back with a long, drawn-out sigh. She can already feel the weight of exhaustion pulling at her limbs, but she forces herself to stay upright as she focuses on rebuilding the mental walls that have gradually fallen down throughout the evening.
She’s glad to be back in the tavern room, glad to be away from the constant buzz of the crowd, the constant pin-pricking feeling of people’s thoughts trying to enter into her mind. Most of all, she’s glad to be away from the sympathetic looks that the group have been giving her ever since Bassuras.

She’s about to move the blankets off of them to get a better look. Imogen is always so beautiful in the morning, she wants to see her skin, the way her chest flushes when they kiss like this, the way her hands struggle to find purchase somewhere because she wants to touch her everywhere—but Imogen pulls her closer, lifting her head up to cup her face and press her lips against her forehead again.
“Hi,” Imogen whispers against her skin. “Good mornin’.” Another kiss, before pulling back. “You look so beautiful.”

“Laudna, you died?”
She knew this, surely? Imogen had been very clear, from the very first time that they met, that every thought in Laudna’s head would work its way into Imogen’s, that she couldn’t control it, that she saw everything even when she didn’t want to. She must have seen this. They’ve been working together to build up Imogen’s mental walls so she can try and block out the thoughts, have been practicing every night. And it’s working! Imogen is very capable.
And she’s said it before, she thinks. She must have. And Imogen has been with her every day for the past two months. What did she think she was looking at?

Summary
“Nothin’ has to be different. Nothin’ has to change.”
It’s Laudna’s turn to have the corner of her mouth curl and quirk. “But hasn’t it already?” she asks, fingers reaching out and tangling with Imogen’s.
“Is that a bad thing?” Imogen’s voice pitches low, and Laudna feels something pulling, settling, low within her in turn.
Laudna shakes her head, mouth dry and voice gone. Imogen speaks for her.
“Kiss me,” she says. Asks. Pleads.
It’s too much, and Laudna has never been good at denying anything that Imogen wants.
Imogen tastes like oranges.

On a long list of terrible ideas, Imogen reflected, this particular choice on her part really took the top spot.
Her therapy session that week had gone well. Really well, actually. So well that when her therapist had suggested Imogen "take a small step out of her comfort zone", Imogen had seized her rare confidence and decided she’d visit a coffee shop.
