Summary
After Alicent died giving birth to Aemond, Viserys went mad becoming abusive with his children.
When Aegon was 8 years old and Aemond 4 years old, Ser Criston helped them escape to the only place where they would be safe: Dragonstone, under Rhaenyra’s care.
The boys have an impossibly difficult healing journey ahead of them after the trauma they endured, but they are not alone anymore. It's not going to be easy, but their family will help them heal no matter what, trying to get the boys out of their shells.
Both Aegon and Aemond are extremely traumatized after all those years, so it will be hard for them to trust anyone.

When Rupert ends up in hospital, there are two options. Either Taggie does as Taggie wants, and helps him recover at Penscombe, or Rupert comes to the Priory, where Declan can keep an eye on them both. Neither option is ideal, but if having Taggie home over Christmas means having Rupert too, then so be it.
If God exists, he is laughing at Declan.
