Summary
"You got a name?" the man asks. They're almost of height. He's got cedar brown hair and is slimmer than Gale, but in a way that speaks of nature and genes instead of deliberate starvation.
Gale says, "Buck."
"I'm Paul. That your real name, Buck?"
"No," Gale says, and feels like he's lying.
-- After the war, Gale changes

Summary
"Jesus. You got that photographic memory or something?"
Gale shrugs, shaking back into his usual reticent personality. John only knows the word because he'd spied it on one of Gale's report cards, written in neat teacher cursive. He had looked it up afterward, stepping foot into the school library for the first and only time in his academic career so far.
"Something, I guess," Gale says.

Summary
"You're burning up," John counters. He worms his free hand under Gale's sweater and rubs briskly over his stomach. Wants to curl his nails in, but he doesn't. "How's that?"
"I'm cold," Gale repeats.
"You said that already. You've got a fever," John grits out, frustrated, skin numbed with friction but no heat.

Summary
Those who joined the order as adults were almost certain to be an austere type, ready to give themselves over to God's work, to choose it over life outside these walls. Gale doesn't appear that way in the slightest.
It had been less of a choice then, and more an escape.

Summary
Gale's mouth turns down. Rueful, or maybe considering. His cadet uniform is pressed free of wrinkles, hair pomaded into a tight part. John's form wears it well. And the mustache does make him more dashing, John decides. He looks goddamned handsome, a perfect counterpart to the pinks and golds he's currently embodying.
Gale catches on. "You're a narcissist," he scoffs.
-- John and Gale swap bodies

Summary
He shifts; is about to call for Gale when Gale says, "I'm right here," from out of sight, closer than John had been expecting. He's still fuzzy-headed, still confused, until stubble scrapes high up over the back of his thigh and then Gale is licking into him again and suddenly John is all too awake, nerves flickering before firing into overdrive, brain finally putting the pieces together.

Summary
When he shimmies off the bed, he sees a laser focused Gale, eyes red-rimmed and hooded from the single obligatory shot that all brothers had to take with their assigned pledges. He’s staring at the vicinity of John's hips where his jeans have sagged. That alone wouldn’t be a problem, if not for how the hem of his t-shirt is also flapped over itself to reveal black lace skimming over both hipbones.

Summary
Those are the times Gale feels like a younger sibling. Other times, he— doesn't, and there really isn’t any one word or phrase that encapsulates how he feels then.
Technically he's known John for almost his entire life. Hard not to put someone like that on a pedestal.
-- Gale has nowhere to go, except maybe his ex-best friend's older brother's place

They pass under a lamp glaring thousands of lumens in a tangible curtain. Bucky stares at him for a couple steps before his eyes pucker into a squint. Gale meets his gaze steadily until he can't stand it anymore and takes a stab.
"You forgot my name," he guesses, and Bucky relaxes.
"You got me."
"It's Gale."

"He still married?"
"He's married," John says after a pause. "Yeah, he's married, you could say that."
Clearly there's something Harry is missing. He's shrewd enough to pick up on that, but not much else. The foil label on his beer bottle peels away easily when he scratches at it, considering whether or not to delve further.
-- Summer 1968, and Harry meets up with John

Summary
During the few nights out she spent with him and Gale, she saw how that smile and those eyes could transform into something more suggestive, or dangerous. All men had that capability, she presumed, and women too, but John's spectrum of it ran wider than what she was used to. There was a rush in watching it work, driven by a darker undercurrent of how she could've been caught up in its net if not for Gale.

Summary
"Hey," John calls, grabbing it, and Jacob turns. "You almost left this."
Jacob looks pained. "Geez. I could've skipped homework and had an excuse."
He walks back toward John, who holds out the text. "Thanks," he says. He reaches out to take it. John's thumb presses against his nail for a split second and Jacob dies for a second time right there on the floor of Mrs. Engle's classroom.

Richie looks up at the pockmarked ceiling. Tries to figure out if there are some constellations poked in there. If anyone ever tells him he doesn't have manners, he's gonna point them to this moment, because here he is looking away from the impending carnage and would someone without manners do that? No they fucking would not.
"Maybe, like," Fak starts, hesitant. "Like something about how you've really never known reciprocity from anyone that you truly loved? Or something?"

He sways. His equilibrium is shot. "I don't know. Maybe. Kinda looks like there's Vaseline smeared all over my eyes. Everything's dark."
"It's pretty goddamn dark in here," someone says to his right. At his ten o'clock, someone else says, "It's nighttime, Bucky. Seems normal to me."

"Got an important question to ask you," Bucky says. Gale tenses a little, but Bucky just holds out an open palm, face up.
"Chicken," he states, then lays out his other hand, "or egg? Which came first?"
The tension evaporates, replaced with an odd sense of disappointment. Gale shifts to push Bucky's hands away. "Whatever machine they use to evaporate those eggs came first."

Summary
Bucky keeps an eye on Gale while they're waiting around to be escorted back to England. He doesn't seem so bad for the first few days, but Bucky wakes up on the fourth morning to find Gale lying on his cot, listless. A few of the guys ask in passing if he's doing okay and Gale waves them all off, says, "I'm peachy. Just feeling a little under the weather."
Bucky waits until the coast is clear before heading over to state the obvious. "You need to eat."

Summary
"I died over there, you know. I might be here, right now, with you," he pats Joe's hair, "but I'm actually dead, Lieb."
In fact there are hundreds of corpses Bucky left strewn across Europe, and one in Algeria, and a whole fucking pile of them in the stalag. He used to get so angry at Gale for trying to gather and bundle them all together. Bucky wanted to say, Don't open that box. You're gonna mix ‘em all up into a tangled fucking mess if you do that, so don't.

"You're soft," Jonah whispers. He touches Louis's jaw. There he goes still smiling, like it's a revelation, like he oughta be in wonderment about it all. "You don't seem like it but you soft, Louis."
Louis stares up at him. There's the anger, whipping at his heart and making it race like a horse on a track, but beyond that is something else, too. Something that makes him almost tremble under Jonah's open smile. For the briefest of moments, Louis allows himself to believe that softness is a pure good, through and through.

"Wait." Carmy squints and finally processes the surroundings: he's in Chicago. More specifically, in his new apartment, on the thrifted couch. The sun is coming in through the windows at unfamiliar angles. He props himself up on one elbow and shakes his head. "Wait, what?"

"Like, every slice is a layer of being okay, right? You're okay, you're okay, you're okay -- and then maybe at some point, the holes in each layer line up with one another and there's a tunnel straight through the whole fucking pile. And suddenly you're not okay. You know?"
His cigarette has already run down. He drops it and fumbles a loosey out from his shirt pocket. For some reason his heartbeat is coming fast and relentless, like he's in some sort of danger, except he's just on the fucking phone with Sydney in an empty alley.
-- Carmy calls Syd for no real reason at all
