Summary
“Agatha,” she said, “Are you referring to any rule in particular?”
“I read the book. We’re supposed to conceive a baby, generally. And tonight, more specifically.”
Rio’s face twisted into a familiar, constipated look. “I think I need to sit down.”
Or,
On the first night of an arranged marriage, two childhood best friends blunder through the question of whether to make good on a religious obligation to conceive a child.

Summary
Agatha leans in towards Rio, all attention on her, “I told them I’m going on a date tonight—”
“Ah, so there’s the line. You know, if you wanted to take me out, you could’ve just asked.”
Agatha glares at Rio for her stupid joke, “No need for all the excess—a photo of you will do, just so they know when I come home that I could date if I wanted to.”
“So you want a picture of me to convince everyone back home that you’re going on a date… instead of just going on a date?”
Agatha clicks and points at Rio, “Now you’re getting it.”
OR
Agatha needs to convince her son and her friends that she’s having the whirlwind vacation romance of a lifetime. Probably so they don’t think she’ll die alone. That’s where Rio (who she knows absolutely nothing about) comes in.

Summary
This is a story of five years, one marriage, and the space between wanting something deeply and being able to keep it from slipping and spiraling away.
Starring in two timelines: an actress falling in love, a writer falling apart.
They fall in love. They never stop.
But jealousy simmers, words go unsaid, and sometimes love alone isn’t enough to hold everything together. -

Summary
Agatha reaches for the idol and Rio uses the couple inches she has on Agatha to keep it out of reach. Agatha growls at her. Oh, this is fun. Every time Rio’s been on this show before, she and Agatha worked together as a well-oiled machine. Until it all went sour. But it’s never been like this, never a push and pull, out here where they are closer to nature, where they are closer to being their animal selves. Rio likes it far more than she should.
Agatha shoves her to the ground and Rio goes willingly, still holding the idol out of reach of Agatha’s wanting hands. Rio fondly remembers when those hands wanted her.

Summary
“I don’t believe you. You prefer me—“
“Compliant?” Rio stood slowly, her eyes never leaving Agatha’s face. The action put her inches away, her body heat radiating out, searing Agatha’s skin. “Obedient?”
Agatha’s hips shifted against her will, her lips parting slightly. She closed her eyes against the heady mortification that razed through her chest. She felt Rio move closer and she parted her legs without thought.
Rio stepped between them but didn’t touch, hands settling on the desk inches from Agatha’s hips and hands.
“You always were such a brat.” Rio’s breath was hot against Agatha’s ear, her voice throaty and raw and filthy. “You never knew how to do what you were told.”
Or: After five years away, a still-grieving Agatha is dragged back into the FBI and the arms of her ex-wife.

Summary
“And where would I do that, moron?”
“I don’t know!” Rio flounders, “In the shower?”
“You think getting myself off quietly in the shower, in the room next to your bedroom, having to be quick so the hot water doesn’t run out… is conducive to good orgasms?”
Well, when she puts it like that.
OR
Rio and Agatha aren’t friends. They’ll probably never be friends—they’re just wired that way. But that doesn’t stop their mutual friends from suggesting Agatha live with Rio while her divorce finalizes. If it sounds like a recipe for disaster, it probably is.

Summary
On the third day of Agatha's absence, Jen walked into the staff room, halfway through a bland bagel, when Rio looked up at her with a pout. "Agatha used to get cafeteria bagels," she sniffed.
Jen let out an exasperated breath. "She hasn’t died, Rio. But you might soon, if you don’t get your shit together and stop sulking."
"Here, look," Rio shoved her phone in Jen’s face. "She texted me this half an hour ago." She bit at her fingernail, looking genuinely worried. "Do you think she’s trying to ask me to come take care of her?"
Jen squinted at the screen, reading the message: 'i cant find tortilla chips whered u hide them? xoxo'
She felt herself age several years in that very moment. Slowly, she looked back up at Rio. "Your desperation is ruining my appetite. I’m finishing this bagel in my office."

Or, Jennifer Kale is the new school counselor, and everything is great. Well—almost. There's just one little snag. You know, the kind of snag that looks an awful lot like two emotionally dysregulated colleagues who can't help but make their situationship everyone else's problem?

“She won’t even admit that she’s gay for a New York City Ballet dancer. You think she would go for you, Rio Vidal of Cobb, Oklahoma?” Jenn raises an eyebrow, “IT service provider who plays Elden Ring in her spare time.”
“Maybe.” Chirps Rio. Hope does, after all, spring eternal.

Or,
Rio goes from IT service monkey to fucking her very beautiful, very poised boss in a very short period of time. And then, of course, there’s the aftermath.

Summary
The first time Rio proposes, it’s entirely on accident.
They’re dumb twenty-something-year-olds in college, so of course Agatha doesn’t take her seriously. That’s fine. It’s to be expected, even. Rio knows, with a certainty carved down to the place where she’s raw, unfinished, where the ancient Greeks used to say their gods tore whole souls in two, cursing mortals to spend their flickering, candle flame lives searching for the other halves of their spirits, that she’ll get the chance to ask Agatha this question again.
(And again, and again, and again.)

“I’m not helping Agatha pull off a scheme,” Rio asserted, though not even she believed herself, “I’m trying to stop her before she goes into labor in the auditorium.”
Lilia’s face contorted in pity, “Well,” She said, “Good luck with that.”
Or,
Mild-mannered high school soccer coach Rio Vidal gets roped into a scheme to help her 9 months’ pregnant coworker put on the opening night performance of The Crucible that will save the school theater department.

Summary
“Friends do not do what you and Rio did. And you and I certainly never have.”
“Me and Rio had—” Agatha pauses, her eyes sliding over to Teen, who has stolen one of her gelt and is nibbling on it, “—s-e-x one time. And then decided to be friends. Just friends. And have been friends ever since.”
"I’m seventeen,” Says Teen tiredly, “I know how to spell sex."
*
Or, after having sex once (or like three times, but who's counting, definitely not Agatha) Agatha and Rio decide to be friends. Just friends. They are amazing at it, obviously.

Summary
“Is that what you want?” Agatha asks in a low voice, closing the space between them with a final step forward, until Rio’s back hits the wall. “Want me to fuck you? Is that why you’re here?”
This time, the breath leaves Rio’s lungs in a gasp. It’s music to Agatha’s ears. Death’s beautiful face contorts with the effort of containing herself, but she stutters out a response anyway. “I told you,” she starts, and oh that tremble in her voice gives her away so easily. “I was in the neighbourhood.”
Agatha stares at her for a moment longer, then her lips curl into a smirk. “No you weren’t.”
“No,” Rio replies, unable to stop herself. “I wasn’t.”
