Summary
The door swung open with such force that it slammed against the wall inside.
Vi gasped, her heart shooting up in her throat.
“Oh my fucking-”
She snapped her head up, and her breath caught in her throat.
For a split second she was convinced she was going into cardiac arrest.
Because in front of her stood, towering in the door frame, stood the most beautiful woman Vi had ever seen.
Her navy hair was messy, strands falling haphazardly around her pale face, the rest pulled back into a loose high ponytail. Her startingly blue eyes were widened – sporting the exact same terror that threatened to stop Vi’s heart entirely and send her into an early grave - her mouth slightly agape as she looked down at the Vi crouching on the porch, clutching her makeshift lock pick.
She was tall - taller than Vi - and slender, with long, slim fingers.
Long, slim fingers wrapped around a rifle.
A rifle aimed directly at Vi’s chest.
The woman’s jaw snapped shut and she narrowed her eyes, fingers tightening around the rifle.
“May I ask why you’re attempting to break into my house?”

Summary
Caitlyn sighed loudly, rolling her eyes and letting herself fall back into her chair with a dull thump. She slumped down, arms folded across her chest, lips pursed.
“Of course not,” she muttered. “God forbid anyone actually takes responsibility around here.” She brushed a loose strand of hair out of her face and lolled her head to the side, fixing her gaze on Steb.
“Write me down for the interview, Steb,” she said, her voice flatter than she intended. “It’s probably best if I do it myself, anyway…”
And then the room erupted.
The group launched into a noisy spiral of ideas, overlapping voices ping-ponging off the walls.
Caitlyn didn’t join the discussion.
She sat still in her chair, knees drawn up to her chest, elbows resting on top of them. Her stomach turned with a low, gnawing ache. Something like dread. Or anxiety.
Or something worse she couldn’t name.
She swallowed it down, straightened her spine, and reached for her pen.
An interview with Vi Wasilewzski.
An interview with a criminal.

Summary
Vi scoffed and stomped forward, the gravel crunching beneath her feet as she approached Caitlyn, who looked up at her with an empty, disinterested expression.
She stopped right in front of her, chest puffed out, voice dripping with venom.
“Good lord, Kiramman, maybe pace yourself for once. What’s the plan? Smoke yourself into an early grave so we don’t have to deal with you anymore?”
Caitlyn’s head jerked slightly, her features a cool mask of indifference.
“Though I am flattered by your concern," she said icily, taking a slow, deliberate drag from her cigarette, “I assure you that I am perfectly capable of handling myself, thank you very much.”
“Oh, yeah? Is that why you’re here?”
Caitlyn slightly perked one of her eyebrows. The look on her face made Vi immediately feel incredibly stupid and childish.
“No. I am here to smoke a cigarette. In peace. Why are you here?”

Summary
Caitlyn Kiramman was always meant for more—for Piltover, for greatness, for a life where everything had a place, everything made sense. Vi was never supposed to be part of that equation.
They were young when they first met. They weren't dating, not really. Gravity is the reason we fall, Caitlyn had said to her. But Vi knows now—there are other forces, unseen, inescapable. Light bends under gravity. Even the brightest things carry weight. And Caitlyn had always been light to her.
Years later, Vi sees Caitlyn’s name on the news. Caitlyn, who has been in control of everything, is in a car crash. Twisted metal, shattered glass, sirens wailing into the night. By the time Vi reaches the hospital, they’re already fighting to keep Caitlyn alive. She watches from the ER doorway as doctors force air into Caitlyn’s lungs, as her heart monitor flatlines, as they shock her back to life.
Vi doesn’t go inside Caitlyn's room. Maddie does. The fiancée. The woman Caitlyn chose.
Vi should leave. She should let go. But some things never stop moving, even when they should. Even light, when it’s close enough to the edge, can’t escape.

"To dream pretty things." Tobias had told her.
"So that you know you're not alone," had added Cassandra.

Summary
"Violet," Caitlyn breathes, the name a quiet reverence on her lips. "Have you ever thought about it? Having children, I mean?"
Vi blinks, stunned.
She should've seen this coming, really.

Summary
“No,” Caitlyn whispers, shoulders slipping. Oh, she’s not strong enough for this. “No, no- you- why you? Why you?”
She still smells the way she did two years ago— standing at their doorstep, packing her bags, saying we shouldn’t have done this. I shouldn’t have done this.
“Why me,” Vi repeats. “Isn’t that the fucking question.”

Summary
It is when she reaches out to brush Caitlyn’s shoulder that her world is turned inside out. One moment her fingertips touch wet skin and the next the hard metal of the muzzle of a handgun is pressed against her temple, and Caitlyn’s eye is wide, so, so wide even as her hands shake.
Something is wrong. Something is terribly wrong because Caitlyn’s hands never shake on a gun.
