Robby meets Jack when they're ten years old. He is living with his grandma in a new town, lost and alone. His mom died, all the other kids are being mean to him and he desperately needs a friend.
He doesn’t yet know that Jack is a ghost who was sent back to live alongside him. From the moment they met, their time together was bound to be limited. And yet, despite the heartache it will inevitably bring him, Robby refuses to regret having known him. So he simply has to believe it will be ok in the end. (And it will be.)
There is another boy there. One he has never seen around before. He is standing right next to the old fireplace. He is dressed a little weird but he smiles when he sees him, with a dimple in his cheek. His teeth are a little crooked. Freckles are splattered all over his face and his ginger hair looks like the last time they saw a comb was in prehistoric times. He loves him instantly.
