Peter selfishly thinks that he could have used the free food more than Johnny, on account of his crippling poverty, but keeps his mouth shut. “Every time I do ground-level work, I remember how satisfying it is. And I only get to do ground-level work with you. I feel like I should be thanking you.”
“Are you kidding me?! Whenever I’m injured, the Four patches me up, for free. You take care of New York for me when I can’t. You’re always there when I need you to be. If this is a competition, then you’re beating me, fair and square.”
“If me being connected to this city and its people is beating you, then I want to beat you for the rest of my life.”
Peter softens. He reaches forward and touches Johnny’s arm. “I’d like that.”
