December, 1969
It’s been five years since their parents’ death. Five years since their lives threatened to crumble around them. Despite all the suffering they’ve endured, the Curtis brothers have held up well enough. Ponyboy, still battling his depression and eating disorder from Johnny and Dally’s deaths, has excelled in school and is on track to graduate in the spring with flying colors. Darry has moved into a managerial role at the construction company, sparing him from the injustice of roofing outdoors. Sodapop now runs the DX with Steve. Hell, even Two-Bit’s finally put in the effort to graduate high school and get a job.
As usual, the universe has something to say about that. This time it doesn’t come in the messy, dramatic form of a car crash or a death and a suicide in one night. It comes in a neat, orderly draft notice in the mail.- Language:
