Summary
When he sits back down at the head of the table, he kisses Gregory on the cheek. “Do you want to make a wish too?”
Gregory gurgles, entranced by the flames of the eighteen candles, tears still drying on his reddened cheeks. Gregory rarely cries—a trait that does not run in the family, something the older four make a point to remind Eloise and Francesca—but when he does, he seems to pick the worst moments.
Anthony wraps one hand around Gregory’s tiny fists as a safety precaution, and he reaches across the table, tugging the cake closer to them. He mimes it once before he starts blowing out the candles. Gregory copies him with a joyous coo.
And, mid-laugh after Gregory manages to take out precisely one of the candles, Anthony realizes he does need to make a wish, and he has nothing he wants to wish for. So, he wishes for more of the same.
