When Adam’s mark first appeared on the inside of his wrist, he was ten years old.
He excitedly showed his mother as soon as she woke up, so she could read it before she had to go to work. She didn’t even scold him for staying up past his bedtime when she saw why he had stayed up to talk to her.
“Oh,” she said, holding his wrist gently in her hand. “It must be in a different language.”
Adam frowned. “What? No, no. Look at it. It says ‘Do not be afraid.’”

The phone rings.
Will heaves a groan. He hates talking on the phone - and he was trying to read.
He considers ignoring it for a moment. Then stands up from his place at the table and steps over a dog on the floor to reach the landline on the far kitchen wall. He brings the phone up to his ear.
"Hello?" he asks.
"Hello, Will." The voice is unmistakable.
