Summary
Even with his stores of near-infinite knowledge, D3rlord3 was not prepared for the sight that awaited him when he answered his front door:
On his doorstep stood a scrappy-looking young man in a Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts, and a beaming smile. In his hand was D3rlord3’s hastily-written book.
The man, still smiling, tilted his head and asked, “Did you write this?”

Summary
“You said he needs a clean mind, right?” Avery says after a few moments. “So what if we corrupt mine too?”
“No.” Derek tells him firmly. The very thought of it makes him sick. “It’ll slowly kill you to take on infinite knowledge like that. It’s slowly killing me, Avery. You need to go.”
“What if,” Avery says, not budging an inch, “I take on half of yours? Would half kill me?”
Derek goes to protest but pauses mid-sentence. Thinks about it. Rolls the question around in his vault of infinite knowledge to find…
Damn, that actually might work…
(Or Avery comes up with a different solution, Derek figures out how to execute it, and both of them learn to live with the result.)

Summary
Derek reads the text fondly, something warm curling in his being, or whatever’s left of it. Despite how little they got to talk in person, Derek remembers everything he learned about Avery. To say he knew him better than he knew himself would be accurate. Derek isn’t sure what’s going on with him in that moment— or more accurately, some part of him knows what’s going on with him in that moment, his mind is currently just too weary to grasp the infinity of it all— but he knows Avery. Avery is familiar.
Avery makes it a little easier to not get lost in his own, untethered head.
d3rLord3: It’s me.
d3rLord3: You found me again. You’re becoming an expert at that.
(Or Avery manages to recover something, or rather someone, from the wreckage of that world. Derek becomes a ghost in the machine and finds he doesn’t mind it.)

Summary
“You want to throw my laptop off a cliff.”
“Or smash it. Or set it on fire. Or all three. We can workshop it.”
There’s another quiet laugh, but it doesn’t quite stick the landing. Avery hears the hesitation creeping back in, curling around the edges of D3r’s voice like fog.
“In person,” D3r says, not quite a question.
“Yeah,” Avery says easily, like it doesn’t make his stomach flip. “In person. I wanna meet you.”
The words hang between them.
He watches D3r’s character on screen because it’s easier than imagining D3r’s face doing whatever it’s doing right now. The avatar doesn’t react, of course. Just stands there in the pixelated grass, the moon casting a pale square light over his shoulders. Avery imagines he can see tension in the way the model is angled, which is ridiculous, but he’s very good at projecting onto blockmen at this point.

Summary
Derek really tries to convince himself he's okay with dying; thankfully, Avery is stubborn enough to do the impossible. In the end, it's surprisingly simple.
