He turned his head up and pressed his lips to Ilya's fingertips. Over and over, on each finger, and then his palm. It felt so different from when Ilya was alive, because Ilya wasn't moving with him. He'd never before realized how much of a two-person activity it was to simply give affection.
"I love you." Kiss. "I love you so much. You are the best thing in my life, too, and you always will be. Always. You were the best years of my life. It doesn't even come close. I… god, you're incredible. What we have is—it's beyond my wildest dreams, Ilya. I never thought I'd experience a love like what you gave me. Thank you. Truly."
Ilya's heart weighed 300 grams.
300 grams, Shane thought. The smallest package of chicken at the grocery store was more than that. How had he fit so much devotion into so little space?

“She likes to haunt my freezer,” Ilya says, as Shane shuffles out of his Reeboks and into a pair of Ilya’s house slippers.
It had seemed like a joke, when Ilya first brought it up. Their last morning at the cottage, dropped casually as they scrambled eggs together in the kitchen, a parting gag for the road. Oh, by the way, you know that dead mother I told you about? The one who killed herself and left me to find the body? Yes, okay, so, she is also a ghost and she haunts me. Well, my house, really. No, I am serious, Hollander! I am so serious, Russians do not joke, please! You do not believe me? You do not trust me? Fine. You will come over to my place some time and I will show you. She likes flowers, please bring daffodils.
Shane brought the daffodils.

Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.
He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

Summary
Ilya Rozanov has been drafted by Boston, the number one pick overall, but his father doesn't want him moving to America and so takes steps to block his visa. He's going to have to go back to Russia and stay there forever and that, thinks Shane Hollander, is wrong.
It's so wrong that Shane can't stop himself from doing something about it. Even though that something is the most reckless, the only reckless thing he's ever done in his life. He marries Rozanov in secret, to keep him out of Russia and put him on a path to Canadian citizenship.
Shane's got a five-year plan to get him there and when you have a plan nothing can go wrong. Right? Right. When you have a solid plan and a marriage that's on paper only there's no risk of feelings getting involved. Not on Rozanov's part and certainly not on Shane's.
