It all started with a script for the new contest film. A script that was going to be the most beautiful script Ichikawa had ever written, the most glorious film he'd ever directed, the pièce de résistance of his high school film career. It would be a whole new genre that Ichikawa had never done with the film club before, all for a masterpiece that would stretch the new third years' filmmaking abilities to their limits.
And that, of course, was why he had to spend summer break working on the film and only the film.

Strictly speaking, it really isn’t the first time. She’s slung an arm over his shoulder that was promptly shrugged off more than a few times. A few other times, she’s plucked a bug or a leaf or a bit of fluff from his shirt and flicked it away before he noticed. But it isn’t until Rune is sitting in her mother’s backyard, staring blankly off into the distance as he (she hopes) dives his way back into reality, that she thinks — I need him to know I’m here.

It's hard to be the wrong person at the right time.
Haruki tells him over coffee after one of his shifts at the cafe. It takes a few seconds for Kouji to process the announcement. Once he does, he blurts out the first thing that comes to mind, which unfortunately is, "Dump him right now and date me instead."
Haruki fumbles his iced coffee, almost slopping it all over his shirt. "What about Mariko? Wait, I mean, Take-san, do you even date guys?!"
"It'll be tough," Kouji admits grimly, "but I will bear it for you."
